Other Smalltalk Resources
There are a number of resources available for free, or at very low cost, which enable you to try Smalltalk.
For example the BURKS CD is full of shareware, freeware, etc. collected by Brighton University, and available from them on a CD, saving the time and cost of downloading individual software items from various Web sites, etc. It has a copy of Smalltalk Express, Squeak, and Linux, for example and a whole load of other useful stuff, like descriptions of graphic file formats, various FAQ's etc. It is well worth the small cost for production and delivery. The CD is currently at version 2, but check the Brighton site for updates.
Full ordering information (as well as a copy of the entire CD) is
available at the BURKS website http://burks.bton.ac.uk. For single
copies, the price is 4 UK pounds (3.00 for the CD + 1.00 p&p) and you
can order it by sending credit card details (name, address, card
number, expiry date) by fax to 01273 642405 or email to burks@bton.ac.uk
or you can send a cheque payable to "University of Brighton" to the
BURKS project, Faculty of IT, University of Brighton, Brighton BN2 4GJ, UK
FAQ's
The following note is provided by Ralph Johnson ----
There are several Smalltalk FAQs, such as http://www.dnsmith.com/SmallFAQ
and http://scam.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/pub/misc/smalltalk/FAQ/
They are big. This is the Smalltalk most-frequently-asked-questions (MFAQ)
document that answers the questions "where do I get the Smalltalk FAQ"
(see above) and "where are the Smalltalk archives". Questions like "is
there a free Smalltalk available" or "what Smalltalk books are available"
are in the FAQ.
Although there are lots of places that have a few Smalltalk files,
there is only one "Smalltalk archive". You can get to it as
st.cs.uiuc.edu by anonymous ftp and on the WWW as http://st-www.cs.uiuc.edu/
There is lots and lots of software in the archive. Some are great.
There are reusable class libraries, games, development tools, and
lots of "goodies", which are little additions to the standard
programming envirnment or class libraries. Most of the code is for
Smalltalk-80, though there is some Smalltalk-V code. We'd be happy
to offer more Smalltalk-V, VisualAge, Smalltalk Agents, etc code if
you send it in to us.
Feel free to try what is there, improve it, comment on it in
comp.lang.smalltalk, and submit your own stuff.
Note that some of the material is covered by the GNU Copyleft, though
most is not.
